Description
(CN: Sichuan: Baoxing)
Paeonia mairei and P. lactiflora are both used in Chinese medicine, and while the latter is frequently cultivated, P. mairei is usually dug from the wild. Fully hardy, and among the earliest flowering peonies in the garden. Grows wild in temperate, deciduous woodlands here in Sichuan, at around 2000m altitude, but is fully hardy to -20C or below. Some forms are wonderfully fragrant!
As with all peonies this species might need warm-cold-warm to germinate. Expect some surface mold, it’s harmless, and this particular species seems to germinate far better from moist seeds than ones thta have been stored dry.
12 seeds per package. Collected 2025, refrigerated since harvest.
